Former President Bill Clinton has managed to play both the mainstream media and the right perfectly with his attempt to sucker the GOP into nominating Newt Gingrich.
In an interview with Newsmax, Clinton said,
He’s articulate and he tries to think of a conservative version of an idea that will solve a legitimate problem…For example, I watched the national security debate last night. And Newt said two things that would make an independent voter say, ‘Well, I gotta consider that.’
He said, ‘OK, I don’t want to legitimize immigrants who came here undocumented, illegally.’ On the other hand, a lot of those people have been here for years, they worked hard, they paid taxes, they’ve got kids in the schools, they’re not criminals, we’re going to have a hard time sending them all home, there’s millions of them. So, I’d like to have a process where they could be here legally but not have a path to citizenship. That sort of splits the difference between the immigration reforms proposed by President Bush and President Obama, which would give a path to citizenship, and would be a version of what President Reagan did.
The mainstream media has jumped all over the fact that Clinton has praised Gingrich, without asking themselves a few questions. First, why is Bill Clinton talking to Newsmax? Second, why would Bill Clinton be saying such nice things about Newt Gingrich? Third, what was his real motivation for praising Gingrich?
The media doesn’t get it. Republicans have never been able to beat former President Clinton. They despise Bill Clinton, and your remember Hillary Clinton calling out the vast right wing conspiracy, you know that the feeling is mutual, so what is President Clinton up to?
It looks like one of the best politicians walking the planet is having a bit of fun with the GOP primary. Of course Clinton would love to see Gingrich nominated, Newt Gingrich can’t win. With his past record in the House and various personal scandals, Newt would be easy pickings for President Obama in the fall. Bill Clinton wants to see Gingrich nominated because it would be great for the Democratic Party if he was the Republican nominee. The attack ads virtually film themselves. Who better for the Party of No to nominate that the man who once shut down the federal government because he felt the president snubbed him on an airplane.
When Bill Clinton is involved, there is always a political motive at work. Bill Clinton is trying to sucker the GOP into nominating Newt Gingrich. As president, Clinton was always two moves ahead of the Republican Party. People often forget that the Republican attempt at impeachment actually made him more popular.
Clinton and Obama may never be best friends forever, but the former president will be out there on the stump for Obama in 2012, just as he was in 2008.
Former President Clinton has played the Republican Party for decades. He owns the GOP. If Republicans were smart, they would be very skeptical of any advice offered to them by a man who wants nothing more than to see them defeated in 2012.
