NASCAR Fans Boo Michelle Obama As She Supports Military Families

Michelle Obama and Jill Biden Booed at NASCAR

“Gentlemen, start your engines!”

The NASCAR audience apparently thought this meant “start your stupidity” and proceeded to boo First Lady Michelle Obama, who was there to support our military families through her Joining Forces initiative. First death is cheered and now championing the troops is booed. The Right seems confused about what it is that they allegedly stand for these days.

Before we get into the thick of it, let me just say that while I’m a liberal, I am also a NASCAR fan. Don’t shoot because I’m also packing and I know how to use it. Oh, I kid.

As a racing fan, I was horribly disappointed today to hear the booing of First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden during the final NASCAR race of the year at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The First Lady was there supporting our troops, one of the main causes she’s championed since becoming First Lady.

The White House details the origins of Joining Forces, “In 2011, Mrs. Obama and Dr. Jill Biden together launched Joining Forces, a nationwide initiative that mobilizes all sectors of society to give our service members and their families the opportunities and support they have earned, and to raise awareness of military families’ unique needs as pertains to employment, education and wellness. Joining Forces has been working hand in hand with American businesses who are committed to answering the President’s challenge to hire or train 100,000 unemployed veterans and military spouses by 2013.”

The White House blog wrote, “As part of the season-ending NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship race, NASCAR will rally its millions of fans at the speedway and online to serve military families through the holiday season by asking them to visit and to find service opportunities and ideas to give back to those who serve our country.”

Were they booing the veterans’ job bank or the woman? Or her husband? Maybe they don’t know. Cheering the troops and veterans, the audience was just as loud booing the wife of the troops’ Commander-in-Chief, our First Lady, and Dr Biden.

Conservative commenters at Big Government TV defended this atrocity by claiming that “Mooshell” (keeping it juvenile) isn’t liked by “middle America”, as if middle America is found at a NASCAR race. As someone who has attended many NASCAR races, I can attest to the fact that middle America is nowhere to be found at a NASCAR race. Middle America would not boo the First Lady at an event where she is supporting the troops no matter how much they might disagree with her husband’s policies. These same paranoid Rhodes Scholars chortled over whether or not she was scared of the “God and guns” country, perhaps unaware that her husband expanded gun rights and that both are Christians.

Also, in another ironic twist, these same conservatives who don’t think the government should fund anything because we’re broke supported taxpayers funding NASCAR cars:

The Army spends more than $7 million a year to sponsor NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Ryan Newman and several million more as part of a partnership with NASCAR. It says the prominent ads on the car and presence at the track help attract recruits.

Today the House gave the green light for that sponsorship to continue, rejecting an amendment introduced by Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN) that would have blocked the Pentagon from using taxpayer dollars for NASCAR ads.

The amendment failed by a largely partisan vote of 281-148, with Republicans overwhelmingly voting against the measure.

McCollum called the NASCAR sponsorship a waste of taxpayer money. “Taxpayer-funded NASCAR race cars are an absurdity at a time when the Republican-Tea Party is cutting federal support for homeless veterans, law enforcement officers, and firefighters,” McCollum said in a statement when she introduced the amendment this week. “I know NASCAR fans are passionate and patriotic. This amendment gets the government out of NASCAR and gives them the opportunity to encourage the private sector to demonstrate its patriotism by donating a military sponsorship.”

So much for that private sector meme. BOOO! So much for values that are consistent. BOOO!

I can’t imagine booing Laura Bush as she advocated for literacy rates just because her husband had pushed us into a war based on lies ( a much larger issue than disliking “Obamacares” for reasons still unclear other than ‘cuz Fox said so), but then, no one is going to accuse the modern Right of having class.

All is not lost, however, as in the pre-race they received a standing ovation, during which Michelle Obama said NASCAR has been “amazing in terms of its support, not just today but every day for military families.”

Luckily, NASCAR fans made this faux pas in Florida, which will no doubt play a pivotal role in the 2012 elections. Lest Floridians wish to be painted with the boorish brush of Southern inhospitality (code for racism and a sin of Sodom) Joe Wilson style, someone had better come forward to denounce the rudeness.

Shame on you, NASCAR fans. Is this really how you want to be seen, as the moronic puppets of Fox News instead of the renegade lovers of speed and skill?

NASCAR: Now known as the place where patriotism goes to die, booing the wife of the Commander-In-Chief as she supports our veterans and military families.
