Live Blog: CBS Republican Foreign Policy Debate

9:05

Comment From Kos
I do not believe Cain is a real person, he must be some kind of badly preprogrammed ‘perfect republican candidate’
9:04
Heh – Sleuth- Good point:-) yes, let’s declare the official winner before I sign off:

The winner of the Republican foreign policy debate is Barack Obama. The loser is the American people. Thanks for playing:-) VOTE!
9:03

Comment From sleuth1
Ben2, I think Obama won again!
9:03
Kos – yes, that’s the GOP way – I’ll beat you up first! They call it foreign policy, we cal it preschool.

Thanks for joining me everyone! Next time I’ll get the comments going faster. Jason will be doing his usual post-debate winners and losers column so be sure to catch it!

Goodnight!
9:02

Comment From sleuth1
thanks for live blogging this. Good job!
9:02

Comment From Ben2
I missed the debate… Who won who lost?
9:02

Comment From sleuth1
Foreign aid is the 1%, I could make a topical joke, but I’ll resist.
9:02

Comment From Kos
Hi everybody, that no boos moment is such a republican thing: put up or shut up!
9:01
Ugh- totally right, should have put Israel in the drinking game.

OK……..they just left the debate. The stations just up and left the debate. That’s what they think of the Republican debates.

As we close tonight’s debate, I think we need to congratulate the audience for only booing the candidates. I didn’t hear booing for death tonight. Very pleased.

9:00

Comment From sleuth1
good thing “Israel” wasn’t in the drinking game. I’d already be hammered. Oh…wait…
8:59
Good point Mark re foreign aid making 1% of the budget. Facts are not needed here:-)
8:59
OK, that debate is sort of over. If you want to watch more of it, you can go to the interwebs where DeMint and Graham will be asking questions of the “candidates”.

God save us all.
8:58

Comment From sleuth1
“veering toward a Palin high moment”… bwahaha!
8:58

Comment From Mark
They don’t seem to be aware that foreign aid makes up a whopping 1% of the US federal budget.
8:58

Comment From Adalia
On the Cain trivia! lol! Good one.
8:58

Comment From Adalia
Foreign aid for Israel starting at zero? But special ally, therefore funding. That’s typical Rick Perry logic for ya!
8:58

Comment From Effie
Isn’t that CENSO
8:58

Comment From Effie
Let me finsih…oops! Cheers are ok, but boos are not…
8:58

Comment From Effie
When the CBS journalist told people cheers were ok, but boos were not….
8:57
Perry trying to look strong, but veering dangerously close to a Palin high moment.
8:56
More Cain trivia for you:

re the UN, Herb said:

“I would not allow a pip-squeak potentate dictator… to come here and insult our president.”

To which I reply, “No, we save that for the Republicans.”
8:55

Comment From Adalia
Huntsman has a brain and facts. GOP is allergic to both.
8:55

Comment From Adalia
Huntsman is the only sane candidate there. Mitt’s trying too hard to sound like he belongs in the extreme but he doesn’t wear it well at all.
8:54

Comment From sleuth1
ooh oooh! and audience participation allowed if it’s not fierce enough!
8:54

Comment From sleuth1
make it a free-for-all, no moderators, winner takes all!
8:54

Comment From Adalia
Hey, Sarah. They want to portray Obama as a wuss Hence, no Obama’s wars.
8:54

Comment From Adalia
Republicans love war
8:54

Comment From Adalia
Hey, Sarah!
8:54

Comment From Adalia
Newt gets applause for ignoring International humanitarian law. Not as mean as wanting to kill people for being poor. Looks like this is a tame bunch.
8:54

Comment From Adalia
Sarah, you’re doing great with this. don’t know if you can read this or not, hope it doesn’t end up on the screen.
8:54

Comment From sleuth1
I want to see one of these debates end with a five minute cage match.
8:54

Comment From Adalia
Huntsman gets it. That makes him ineligible as the GOP candidate.
8:54

Comment From Dusty
You’re doing a great job Sarah.
8:54

Comment From Adalia
I’ll give Ron Paul credit for knowing that water boarding is torture under international and domestic law.
8:54

Comment From Adalia
Michelle’s hair is wound too tightly, her answer on the torture question proves it.
8:54

Comment From Guest
This really is painful ..
8:54
You’re right Adalia. They don’t want to remind everyone who’s the boss. / Sleith, no moderators – I love it – fight to the death- like the Gladiators! Republicans would LOVE that. They could make it a reality TV show.
8:53
Huntsman gets to talk again. He should – he was an ambassador to China. He calls Mitt’s answer a clownshow. Can’t do what MItt suggested. Oh dear. Jon says we should be reaching out to the internet generation in China. So, he’s for diplomacy. GOP won’t like that.
8:51
he’s going to call them Commies. HELLO, people! You gotta tell ‘em who’s boss!
8:51
Oh noes, moderators ask Romney how he is going to MAKE China do something….
8:50
Hey Dusty! Nice to see you:-) Sleuth – cage match! Genius.
8:50
Hey Adalia. No one has said Obama’s wars yet! What goes on here?
8:49
Only ten more minutes, people. Hang on……
8:49
Perry making a call out against Commies. Says virtue is important. Huh. Confound me, Ricky. How’s that porn investment? meh….
8:48
Painful…….

“KIll people who are trying to kill you” Republicans love death.
8:47
I just saw your comment Adalia! Hello!
8:47
Moderators telling audience to stop booing. NO BOOING OF THE CANDIDATES ALLOWED!
8:46
Romney beating up Obama. Good luck with that Mittens. Obama got Osama. Et al.
8:46
Romney says “this must be an American century” – hello, campaign slogan.
8:45
Huntsman gets to talk. “We diminish our standing in the world ….when we torture.” GO Jon! Bachmann should be humiliated along with Cain but they don’t know what they don’t know.
8:44
Hey, South Carolina so far has had most civilized audience. They are going crazy for Ron Paul’s no torture and now Bachmann is going crazy trying to get a word in but the moderators ignored her.
8:43
Ron Paul gets to speak! Torture is ilegal. He says water boarding is torture and crowd cheers. Good on the crowd – no meanies today (so far).
8:42
Bachmann changing topic so she can get her chatty cathy talking points in.
8:42
Oh, torture is NOT torture via Cain.

Bachmann would be willing to use water boarding.

here we thought that was her purpose.
8:42
I guess Republicans don’t get the whole military led by CIVILIAN for a reason…..
8:41
Questions from audience:
Asking Cain about torture. Cain does not agree with torture. Period. But he trusts our military leaders to determine what is and is not torture (So much for the role of the CIC, eh?)
8:40
Perry general enough and hat tip to the illegal immigrant haters. Win win but is it enough? Not a lot of cheers.
8:40
Perry talkin’ how he’s a governor. in charge of the world from day one!
8:39
I wasn’t aware Republicans liked self-deprecation. Too bad Perry couldn’t find a way to make his memory loss Obama’s fault!
8:39
Perry made a joke about remembering the Dept of Energy. Crowd is loving it. Good comedy. But is he running for class clown?
8:38
Santorum going on about computer viruses or something. he should avoid the nerd topics. It doesn’t sell the DECIDER he’s trying to go with.
8:38
Santorum still trying to set himself apart as DECISIVE – big punch at Romney. Did MIttens feel it? I doubt it.
8:37
Santorum: He’s gonna hire people who share his vision. So I guess that means that they will tell him what he wants to hear. And that’s how he’ll overrule his generals. Comforting?
8:37
Remember, this is the guy who said he’s gonna change some rules at the UN:

United States out of the UN, he would institute an “attitude adjustment” in the UN. Yeah. Moving on from the pizza.
8:36
Cain asked how he will know when he should overrule his Generals. He’ll rely on others. I kid you not. OK. It sounded better when he said it.
8:35
Newt hatin’ on the UN now. We knew that was coming.
8:35
Newt still sucking up to Republican base saying everyone is better than Obama. Apparently Newt does not look back.
8:34
Half an hour left. Cain is coming off clownish. Newt and Romney and Santorum doing well. Hunstman sane.
8:32
Question: Why are they only giving these clowns an hour to talk foreign policy and then sticking them on the internet?
8:30
THANK YOU GOD COMMERCIAL BREAK
8:30
Still, Rick S is doing well for himself. Better than before. Can he overcome his poindexterness? IDK.
8:29
Santorum: Pakistan must be a friend to us, they have nuclear weapons. We can’t be indecisive.

OK, I get it now. Santorum is trying to distinguish himself from the others by disagreeing with them. He sees the Cain opening and he’s hoping the boys will ask him to the next dance.
8:28
No one has said drill here drill now. Oh – Here goes Newt- the Arab Spring is “Anti-Christian”
8:27
Newt picking up on the penny business. I fear this is going to be another GOP jingle in 2012. Penny! Penny! Penny!
8:27
We knew Bachmann would bring her Domnionist crazy talk re Israel. Hopefully that will be that. Please God….
8:26
She understands more than Obama, according to her. Meh. OH NOES. Now she’s getting all up in Israel – “they do not see a friend in Obama”
8:25
Here goes Bachmann trying to talk Pakistan. Pakistan has “nuclear weapon.”

WMD!
8:24
Perry: We need a President working with congress (um, Perry, tell it to the Teapublicans) so there’s no foreign aid. No “Pahnnies” (pennies) of our tax dollars unless they are honest with us or something crazy. I don’t think Perry gets what foreign aid is all about. He doesn’t understand that we are buying allies. Best to beat everyone up. Yes, sirree.
8:22
Cain: we don’t know if Pakistan is friend or foe. he announces this is where Osama was found as if we didn’t know this. Sarah Palin’s ghost haunts me.
8:21
We’re in Taliban country now – Newt is beating the Pakistan drum now. Taliban is taking refuge there and now he’s hawking on Iran.

BLOOD IN THE STREETS
8:20
Romney doubling down on his letting the subordinates run the show – listen to the Generals, don’t make a decision as CIC.
8:19
Romney: “We do not negotiate with terrorists.” But, we do negotiate with Republicans? Oh, I kid.
8:19
Hunstman is too smart for this crowd. using big words. Talking confidently.
8:18
Huntsman: Disagrees with everyone on stage (big surprise). he wants to bring the troops home from Afghanistan. Talking economy. Smart man. “I don’t want to be nation building in Afghanistan when this nation so desperately needs to be built.”
8:17
Only fatal decision I see is God telling her to run.
8:17
Eh. I got distracted. Bachmann says Obama has made “fatal decision” re Afghanistan troop withdrawal.
8:16
Where is Michele’s hair tonight?
8:16
Michele: President Obama “dithered”
8:15
Cutting Rick off. Rick S is still talking.Israel – of course. You knew that was coming. Says we need to watch out for nuclear explosion in Iraq.
8:15
Rick Santorum is mad that he didn’t get asked the Iran question because he’s at the end and now he says that Cain et al took his ideas. And Bush opposed him. Rick is on fire tonight.
8:14
Santorum: Define victory : Taliban is a neutered force. Not bad, Rick. He actually answered the question.
8:13
Perry sounds like he thinks he is the CIC “We’re talking to the generals” or some such thing. Was he drunk? Not tonight:-)

Oh, no, he didn’t – he says Obama is giving the military a lack of support.
8:13
Perry: we need to shut down the Iranian bank. Take it from Perry – he knows – he knows– he knows — er. He knows nothing about foreign policy. Calling Obama irresponsible.
8:12
Perry: he’s not going to answer the question they asked him he’s going to answer the one before him. Moderator not happy.
8:11
Props to Ron for that.
8:11
Ron standing firm on his anti-war stance. Go Paul. He’s calling out the Iran war hawks as being similar to Iraq WMD baloney. Oh boy.
8:10
Not to suggest that Newt is a genius. Please. I’m just saying that compared to everyone else on that stage, he does know something about foreign policy.
8:10
Here we go with Newt. Newt is the only person who has any real thoughts to offer here, but he’s busy cheerleading for Romney and Cain.
8:09
See, Romney wants you to believe he’s stronger than Obama on foreign policy and national security.

Snicker.
8:08
OHH he did not : If America reelects Obama Iran will get a nuclear weapon. If they elect me, Iran will not.

Why? Because. Just because!
8:08
Oh, Mitt. he’s stumbling a bit too. You can tell that foreign policy is not the comfort zone. Ohh, Mitt just talked over the moderators and insisted he got more time. Turns out he was right. May be the only time tonight he is correct about something and doesn’t change his mind.
8:07
Romney – this is Obama’s “greatest failing”. LOL.
8:06
Cain re Iran and nuclear weapons – Why is anyone asking the pizza man about Iran? Stumbling he is. Trying to make points re “ohhl” (you know, Republicans think that energy “independence” is national security – they deny that oil is sold on global market).
8:04
Bachmann looks like she’s hanging on by a thread. Crowd loving Ron Paul.
8:04
If the establishment gets its way, Newt will emerge from tonight’s debate as the runner up to Romney.

Ground Rules: Candidate gets one minute to respond. Huh. They don’t say anything about answer the exact question. No surprise there.
8:02
Oh, God. Here we go. We got Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Jon Huntsman (lone sane non-flip flopper).
7:55
Am reminded by a reader that Cain was up in arms that China might be building nukes. That’s right. He also told Spitzer he would come up with some specifics and get back to him. Seriously, this guy is Sarah Palin without the speech problem. Though, to be fair to Sarah, I never heard a peep about her grabbing the heads of anyone.

“Want a job?”
7:49
Here is the challenge for the GOP tonight: Blame Obama for the wars but don’t come off as hating the wars because Republicans should love war, but also appeal to the fact that polls show Americans are sick of the wars. In other words, be hawkish but try to make them forget about sending their children to another war. It’s ok to say “bomb Iran” but try to work in “bring the troops home” — blame the generals for that, but don’t forget to blame Obama for bringing them home at the wrong time for the wrong reason.
7:46
Bets: How many Republicans will get in inaccurate accusations (redundant I know) of Obama cutting defense spending….?

American exceptionalism, coming at ya’! Ok, I’m gonna need fortifications.
7:42
Oh, second drinking words “Obama doesn’t defer to his generals.”
7:42
Think on this as you prepare for the clown show: Cain recently said he wouldn’t devote much time to knowing the president of “Uzbeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan.”

I kid you not.
7:37
Republicans are united on hating the Pres, but what can they say about his foreign policy? Or, more specifically, what can Mitt and Newt say, since the rest of the gang is short on foreign policy knowledge and have yet to really come up with positions other than “I hate Obama”.

Still, they’ll always have “Democrats are weak.” Er, oopsie. Obama got Osama.

No worries, they’ll beat up on the UN and whine about the President apologizing for America. Don’t ask what that means. It means nothing other than Republicans have a lot invested in fake shows of power.
7:35
30% think the President is a Muslim, but not to worry – it’s not just the President who gets the Muslim shaft. A National Journal article quoted a SC resident as saying the following about Mitt Romney, “I’m a Christian and he’s a Muslim,’’ said Kathryn Wilson, 92, a former science teacher in Spartanburg. Told he is a Mormon, she said, “They don’t have it straight either.’’

Oh dear.
7:32
Welcome to the PoliticusUSA live blog of the GOP foreign policy debate tonight, airing on CBS and taking place in South Carolina. I’m Sarah Jones and I drew the short stick tonight, so I’ll be blogging you through the insanity.

Shhhh, don’t ask any questions about the confederate flag – that has been labeled off topic. Bad readers.

Tonight’s drinking words will be “Obama’s wars” . Feel free to leave other suggestions in the comments.

FYI: recent South Carolina poll shows that 75% think Obama is a socialist (we wish) and 36% think he was for sure born in another country.
