On his radio show today, Glenn Beck made the claim that the left and environmentalists would use nuclear weapons against the United States.
Here is the audio from Media Matters:
Beck and company began with, “Look at Che Guevara shall we? Yeah, I am always amazed by the anti-war left loves this guy. Here’s a guy who says, who described, “Savored the acrid smell of gunpowder and the blood of his enemies death.” He threatened the United States talking about to his home to his places of work to his places of recreation; we will attack the enemy wherever he lives. Is that Osama Bin Laden? I don’t know. It sounds just like him. Does this sound like Osama Bin Laden? If I had nuclear weapons he would use them against, “the very heart of America, including New York City,” sounds a lot like Osama Bin Laden. How about this.”
Beck interrupted, “Wait, wait, let me tell you something. Let me tell you something. There are a lot of people on the left that feel exactly the same way. That if they could use nuclear weapons against us to stop us. There are a lot of people on the environmental that if they could stop us, they’ll use anything they can to stop us because, we’re a disease.”
This makes absolutely no sense on so many levels. By definition an environmentalist is someone who is concerned about protecting the environment. Why would a movement that is trying to protect the environment destroy it by launching a nuclear weapon?
The Guevara quotes that were brutally verbally murdered on the Beck show and have been repeated all over right wing media all track back to the same 2010 Canada Free Press story. In typical right wing meme spreading fashion none of the Guevara quotes used are attributed to their original sources. There is no way to know if these are actual and full quotes. Without a way to check their validity, the quotes are dubious at best.
Beck’s logic is that the left loves Che, who said some stuff that sounded like Osama Bin Laden (according to right wing media), which means that environmentalists because they are also on the left would use nuclear weapons against the United States. This makes absolutely zero sense, but 9/11 is just around the corner, and Glenn Beck needs something to scare his audience with, so he created the Che inspired environmentalist al-Qaeda.
This is the kind of thinking that springs from the mind of a desperate, washed up, ex-Fox News personality. Environmentalists are going to destroy the planet in order to save it from people like Glenn Beck.
For the right, 9/11 is like the full moon. It brings out all their crazy.
