The news that a new type of Oreo is hitting the market prompted Rush Limbaugh to refer to it as a bi-racial cookie and call it the Orbameo.
Here is the audio from Media Matters:
Kraft Foods is going to launch a new Oreo. You ought to see that got Sneardly’s attention. It’s a triple double Oreo…Well, what it’s going to be here. It’s actually a biracial cookie. You’ve got three of the chocolate wafers, then you’ve got the white vanilla cream, and then there’s a chocolate cream, so you’ve got three the stuff that says Oreo on it the wafer, then you got the white cream, you got another chocolate wafer, then you got the chocolate cream, then you’ve got the bottom wafer. The triple double Oreo. You wait, it isn’t going to be long before it’s called the Orbameo or something like that. Well, it’s a biracial cookie here, and this story is from the Chicago Tribune, and it’s all about Kraft’s juicing up it’s investment in recent years. Legitimate business.
Rush’s legitimate business story mentions nothing about a biracial cookie, or an Orbameo. The Chicago Tribune limited their reporting to Kraft’s launching of new variety of Oreo. The only reason Limbaugh mentioned the story on his show was so that he could call Obama an Oreo. Yes, yes, I know. All of the Limbaugh defenders are running to the computers to protest that he was joking and that we libs just don’t get his humor.
We get it. Racists have been using this kind of “humor” for centuries. When it was socially acceptable to make nigger jokes, or wop jokes, or Pollack jokes these were just jokes too. The racists have become a bit more sophisticated in the 21st Century. They are still as subtle as a sledgehammer, but the Orbameo joke was more racism disguised as humor.
Limbaugh never misses a chance to use anything to keep reminding his listeners that Obama is not white. He uses race to demean, belittle, and delegitimize this president. It is a political tactic designed to exploit the nation’s racial wounds in order to benefit the Republican Party in 2012. This isn’t about the cookie. It’s about Obama, 2012, and a vile form of racism.
