I wrote yesterday about Star Parker re-writing reality on conservative talk radio, arguing that only by being slaves could blacks be free. Now racist and misogynist Southern Baptist State Rep. Sally Kern (R-OK), has appeared on American Family Radio with Tim Wildmon of the American Family Association and argued that only through self-loathing can gays and lesbians find hope.
Kern was appearing to discuss her new self-published book (that’s right, nobody paid her to do this), The Stoning of Sally Kern: The Liberal Attack on Christian Conservatism. Yes, she ranks herself amongst the great martyrs of history. Why? Because she said some truly reprehensible things about homosexuality and people responded about as you’d expect: they were offended.
Here is an example of what got her stoned:
Listen to Kern’s hate-filled diatribe and then read below what she had to say in her book about the reaction in some 5,000 emails from those who heard it:
“As I sat reading the e-mails, each one hit me like a sharp stone, breaking my heart and filling my eyes with tears. I had never experienced such hate or seen such vulgarity in my life. The hurt seemed to cut right into my soul. It was not just that I was being hurt, but that the truth of God’s Word was being stoned and desecrated.”
The imagine created by these words is rather like that of an Inquisitor crying and feeling hurt and sorry for himself because the prisoner he is torturing is cursing him. It’s unreal.
It is important to remember that in Republican political theology nobody has a right to be offended by what a fundamentalist Christian says. Free speech and freedom of religion, remember, apply only to Christians – and to the right kind of Christians. If you don’t nod your head like a parrot to what they say, you are persecuting them. In Kern’s fevered imagination, she was stoned.
Kern took the opportunity on American Family Radio of doing the Sarah Palin thing and doubling down on these offensive remarks (from GoodAsYou):
Wildmon: Now Sally as you just said, nobody hates the individual homosexual. We want to see them come to repentance and know the Lord and have their lives changed, that’s what we want to see. So we have compassion for people like that
Kern: To me what is hateful is when those people who say ‘you’re born this way, there’s no hope in change, you’re stuck in this, deal with it,’ that is hate. There’s no hope in that
Kern: We’re losing our freedom of conscience. And if the homosexuals get what they want, and as you said it’s not just homosexuality, its immorality or adultery, all of that, but in my opinion the homosexual movement is the tip of the spear. They’re the ones who right now are beating down the door, have their foot in the door, trying to tear down the moral fiber of America. We have to stand up to that. The reason it’s the tip of the spear you don’t see ‘Adulterers Victory Fund’ out there trying to promote adultery. God’s people got to stand up to this.
Yes, that’s right, it’s not conservatives who hate gays but liberals. True hate resides in those who say gays and lesbians are fine just the way they are. That makes gay rights activist Lady Gaga a hater, apparently. I’ve written about the gulf between the gospel of Lady Gaga and her compassion for the LGBT community and the intolerant, hate-filled gospel of the Religious Right. Kern might as well have told us she has gills. You have to wonder how much of this Kern believes herself.
We must remember these words are coming from the woman who has previously said that homosexuality should be criminalized and that it is a greater threat to the U.S. than terrorism, and who tried to pass an Oklahoma “proclamation for morality” in 2009 with fake quotes from James Madison and Patrick Henry.
In other words, I suppose, the Crusades and the Inquisitions were motivated by love and that the real haters are those who oppose holy war and holy torture. It’s important, they seem to be saying, that our victims know repentance.
It doesn’t matter if they say they are doing it because they love you; if they are attacking you, dehumanizing you, stripping you of your constitutional rights, they are wrong. They are violating the Constitution at every turn, showing you and the world that their Bible trumps the will of the people. Kern can pretend (as she does in her book) that she is a champion of tolerance but this is demonstrably false, as her words demonstrate.
America, this is not the first time monotheists have re-ordered reality. It happened in post-exilic Israel when the small misogynist party of monotheistic Jews took power and it happened again in the late Roman Empire when a small misogynist party of monotheistic Christians took power. The results were unhappy in both cases for the majority who found themselves repressed by religious fanatics. It has happened before and it will happen again. They have promised us it will and their actions to date have proven that we can take them at their word.
The line has been drawn; it is time to choose sides.
