There is one thing all Americans hope their representatives in government aspire to besides drawing taxpayer-funded salaries, health insurance benefits, and lobbyists’ campaign contributions and that is to do their jobs administering the government. However, as of late, one party has accomplished absolutely nothing except to draw benefits. When every member of Congress takes the oath of office, they swear to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…bear true faith and allegiance to the same; take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter.” There is no different oath for Republicans or Democrats, so people should expect all representatives to fulfill their oath and work diligently to administer their constitutional duties by working for the good of the country and by extension, the American people.
The current Congress is beset with members who apparently disregard the oath they swore to and are working to end the government as we know it. Whether it is out of fear of the religious fundamentalists or genuine contempt for the government and its people, Republicans have been incrementally dismantling the government at the behest of Libertarians, teabaggers, and corporatists since January 21, 2009 when Barack Obama was sworn in as president. Republicans are spurred on by ultra-conservatives to destroy the government and the Constitution so they can install a corporatist theocracy that will transform America’s representative democracy into a business run by religious fundamentalists. The current debt ceiling debate gives all Americans a glimpse into the future Republicans, evangelical fanatics, teabaggers, and corporatists are planning for this country and it should frighten the life out of every citizen in America. Unfortunately, there is a large segment of the population that welcomes the end of secular America Republicans are aiming for and are pushing to finish off the government once and for all.
The teabaggers are little more than rebranded evangelical fundamentalists whose goal is more than just lower taxes and smaller government. They have used their hatred of all things secular to push Republicans into using the debt ceiling crisis to destroy the credit and good faith of America so they can bring down the government and “reconstruct” it as a Christian nation. The drive to outlaw homosexuality, abortion, and secularism has as its basis the Christian bible and representatives like Michele Bachmann are at the forefront to remake America in the bible’s image. There is good reason people like Bachmann and her teabagger cohorts decry the government as intrusive, overreaching, and morally bankrupt. Bachmann has made no secret of her mistrust and hatred of America’s secular government even though she benefits from the largesse of the American taxpayer. In lieu of legislation to achieve teabaggers’ goal of outlawing abortion, homosexuality, and programs like Social Security and Medicare, teabaggers advocate withholding all funding for government operations that eventually will collapse the government.
Bachmann was educated at Oral Roberts University and her position on everything from gay rights to contraception reflects the Christian fundamentalist mindset that is driving her to destroy secularism in America. Bachmann’s characterization of gays is that they are “sexually dysfunctional” and “part of Satan” and she believes strongly that homosexuality “leads to the personal enslavement of individuals. Because if you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. Personal bondage, personal despair, and personal enslavement. And that’s why this is so dangerous.” Since there is little chance that the majority of Americans will ever support banning homosexuality regardless that Bachmann says it is so dangerous, she and her teabagger caucus are supporting a government default. Bachmann revealed her true intentions about reshaping America into a theocracy when she assailed secularism. She said that Washington elitists “have declared war on marriage, on families, on fertility, and on faith.” There is no war on faith, but her comment shows how she views secular government and why she wants to destroy it.
A couple of months ago at a teabagger conference, Reverend William Temple, chairman of Tea Party Founding Fathers, said that the primary goal of the teabaggers was to reinstate Christian family values, and that “nothing short of eliminating the federal government will be tolerated; the debt ceiling, spending cuts, and the deficit are merely means to an end.” As teabag leader, Bachmann is doing her part to push Christian family values by assailing gays and promoting an end to contraception as dictated by the Catholic Church that is responsible for the rash of personhood amendments in many states. Bachmann is not alone in trying to eliminate the federal government; she has a powerful ally in Grover Norquist.
Norquist is now the de facto leader of the Republican Party and has convinced nearly every Republican to sign a pledge to never raise taxes. In fact, Norquist traveled around the country with a huge sign that reads, “My goal is to cut government in half in twenty-five years, to get it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub.” At least Norquist, who is a despicable human being and an American traitor, has the courage to come out and admit his goal is ending the government. He has even commented that the deficit is not the problem, the existence of the government is. However, if Republicans fulfill the teabaggers’ goal of causing a default, they will be on track to finish off the secular government and install a corporatist theocracy that will impose Christian family values on every American.
This battle over increasing the debt ceiling is not about reining in spending or balancing the national budget because if it was, Republicans would not be so averse to raising taxes on the wealthy. There is little doubt that any Republican in Congress really believes that the government can continue existing without revenue increases. The spending cuts they are proposing will barely cover the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy, oil subsidies, defense spending, and corporate tax breaks, but they will drastically hamper the federal government’s operations. The teabaggers and Norquist control the Republicans’ rigid stance of cutting government spending and if they can prevent the debt ceiling from being raised and the government defaults, they will be halfway to eliminating the government. Once the government collapses, corporatists will take over and give moral authority over the people to the religious right that will replace the Constitution with the Ten Commandments.
Christian Reconstructionists and Dominionists have long dreamed of ending any semblance of secular government in America and they have never been as close to realizing their dream as now. Republicans are mere pawns for the religious right and Libertarian-minded Koch brothers and are being manipulated into eliminating the government altogether. As long as America remains a secular nation with a secular government, the Christian Reconstructionists cannot exterminate homosexuals and eliminate the freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution. But when the government collapses they have powerful financial allies in corporate America who will allow them to install a theocracy in exchange for privatizing the nation. Americans are unaware that teabaggers and vile people like Norquist and the Koch brothers are funding efforts to eliminate the federal government because if they did, they would take to the streets to protect the freedoms Christian fundamentalists want to eliminate.
It is a sad commentary to imagine that after over 200 years, secular government is coming to an end and when it does, no American will be safe. Women will be relegated to perpetual pregnancies and gays will be annihilated from existence and anyone who does not worship according to the Preacher-in-Chief will be imprisoned, burned alive, or stoned to death. There is no good outcome for this country if the representatives in Congress do not start fulfilling their oath to defend the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic. The Founding Fathers never imagined that the domestic enemies would be serving in Congress or thumping their bible at the local revival meeting, but then again, they assumed Americans would be intelligent enough to appreciate the Bill of Rights and the freedoms therein.
For teabaggers like Michele Bachmann and current Republican master Grover Norquist, the freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution are an abomination and since they are only as strong as the government that enforces them, a total American collapse is what they desire. When the Christian Reconstructionists and corporatists finally eliminate the government, the Constitution will not be worth the paper it is written on and secularism will be dead; along with every American who fails to do an act of obeisance to the new masters at Koch Industries and the local church.
