Fundies Upset That FAIR Education Act to Treat Everyone Fairly

California Governor Jerry Brown

Governor Jerry Brown of California signed the FAIR Education Act (SB 48), authored by Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), into law on July 14, 2011. SB 48 amends Sections 51204.5, 51500, 51501, 60040, and 60044 of the existing Education Code, relating to instruction. According to the law’s fact sheet,

The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act would prohibit discriminatory instruction and discriminatory materials from being adopted by the State Board of Education. This bill also amends the Education Code to include instruction on the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans in the social sciences.

Of course, the Traditional Values Association couldn’t wait to start telling their traditional lies about SB 48:

“It is an outrage that Governor Jerry Brown has opened the classroom door for homosexual activists to indoctrinate the minds of California’s youth, since no factual materials would be allowed to be presented,” said Rev. Louis Sheldon, chairman and founder of Traditional Values Coalition (TVC). “By signing SB 48 today, California’s classrooms, textbooks and instructional materials will all become pro-homosexual promotion tools.  If parents don’t already have their children out of public schools, this should cause them to remove them.”

And of course, they’re quick to point out that Sen. Mark Leno is a “homosexual” which proves that he is trying to indoctrinate heterosexual children into a “deviant” lifestyle. What’s next? Teaching them how to manually masturbate farm animals before marrying them?

You’d think SB 48 was a “how-to” program about “deviant” behavior or something, a step-by-step process of teaching young children how to become gay or lesbian, or to massage and stimulate the genitals of their same-sex friends (as if they couldn’t figure that out for themselves if they were so motivated). I guess after deciding first to suddenly become attracted to members of the same sex, the rest is easy. After all, we all know the LGBT lifestyle is a 100% voluntary program!

Stephen Colbert really hit the nail on the head when he said that reality has a liberal bias. For these folks, it does. When presenting facts becomes outrageous, when these facts become indoctrination and promotion, you really have to wonder at the mental health of the folks over at TVA.

They complain about facts but they’re certainly not interested in presenting any of their own. This is their claim:

SB 48 would amend current Education Code sections to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender to the list of categories to be covered in all textbooks and instructional materials. These new textbooks and instructional materials would apply to ALL subjects in curriculum and to ALL grades K-12.

It would be easy for a homophobic parent to draw the conclusion from this (as they’re no doubt meant to do) that children will be taught about the LGBT “lifestyle”. This is what the bill really says:

The FAIR Education Act would ensure that LGBT people are included in instructional materials, which studies have shown is linked to greater student safety and lower rates of bullying. The FAIR Education Act would require that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans are included and recognized for their important historical contributions to the economic, political, and social development of California. Specifically, this legislation would add LGBT to the existing list of underrepresented cultural and ethnic groups, which are covered by current law related to inclusion in textbooks and other instructional materials in schools. This inclusion will help to ensure that students get a fair and accurate picture of the people and events that have shaped our society, and that fair and accurate portrayals of LGBT people are no longer excluded from classroom discussions. The FAIR Education Act will bring classroom instruction into alignment with non-discrimination laws passed by the California Legislature and adopted by the State Board of Education a decade ago, by prohibiting the adoption of discriminatory instructional materials and textbooks.

As you can easily see, the bill is nothing like TVA says it is. Presenting facts about LGBT people who have made useful and important contributions to “the economic, political, and social development of California” is not exactly teaching children how to be gay, or lesbian, or transgender.

But Traditional Values Coalition’s Legislative Analyst and Advocate Benjamin Lopez complains that “Gender roles would no longer just mean male and female. Lesbians and gays would be classified as ethnic groups just like Latinos, Asians, and Blacks…” You mean to say, they would be just like everybody else? Equal with everybody else? But that’s outrageous! Never mind that the Constitution also guarantees that we are all equal before the law.

The religious right (and the Republican Party) cannot abide the idea that all citizens, all skin colors, sexual preferences, ethnicities, genders, and all religions might be treated as equal and as the past two years have demonstrated they will do anything they can do, tell any lies they can tell, to prevent the Constitution being equally applied to anyone but white heterosexual Christians. The outrage should be that FAIR is even necessary in 21st century America.
