On his HBO program Real Time Bill Maher took down Sarah Palin, and disclosed the real source of sexism in America.
Here is the video:
Maher said, “Republicans have to stop thinking up intricate psychological explanations for liberals don’t like Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann. Let me save you all some time. Are you ready? Because they’re crazy people. People who are not that bright and full of awful ideas. Pretty much the same exact reasons we didn’t care about George W. Bush, and make jokes about him. So trust me, it’s not because they have breasts. It’s because they are boobs.”
He said that he isn’t saying that sexism doesn’t exist and isn’t a problem but the word sexist can’t be thrown around, “just to stop people like me from pointing out that Michele Bachmann, now running second for the Republican nomination isn’t a dangerous nincompoop.”
Maher then took down Palin, “And when I point out that Sarah Palin is a vainglorious braggart, a liar, a whiner, a professional victim…a know it all, a chiseler, a bully who sells patriotism like a pimp, and the leader of a strange family of inbred weirdoes straight out of The Hills Have Eyes, that’s not sexist. I’m saying it because it’s true, not because it’s true of a woman. But you know what is sexist? Ignoring poor Tim Pawlenty because he is not pretty. He was a governor who finished his term. Why doesn’t he get the cover of Newsweek like Sarah got this week?
Bill Maher went through many of Palin’s cheesecake covers, and later said, “If you want to know where most of this nation’s sexism is really coming from you don’t have to look any further than the one person who makes the cover of Newsweek more often than Sarah Palin. In America, you’re allowed to justify almost any kind of bigotry, sexism, or intolerance if you source it to God’s big book of bad ideas. God. God, that’s Jesus’ dad. Someone who definitely had issues with women.”
Maher concluded, “Michele Bachmann proudly tells the story of how she has no desire to become a tax lawyer, but her husband commanded her to. That’s right, he commanded her to become a tax lawyer, and what are you going to do. It says so right in the bible. She quotes it, ‘wives you are to be submissive to your husbands,’ and I’m the sexist? That’s weird, but you know what’s really weird? Michele Bachmann tells her husband I’ll do anything you want me to do, and his response isn’t let’s have a three way or I want to cover you in Cool Whip. It’s I want you to be a tax lawyer. That is some sick twisted shit.”
Maher is right. Republicans cry sexism when it comes to Palin and Bachmann, but they use the bible to justify their own daily bigotry and sexism. He offered up a thorough takedown of Sarah Palin, and how she propagates sexism by selling herself as cheesecake conservatism. The Republican formula which they stumbled upon when McCain added Palin to the ticket is fairly simple.
The GOP’s candidate recruitment strategy is fairly simple. They find some telegenic youngish looking woman, give her the standard talking Christian conservative talking points about how a woman should be serving her man, having babies, and staying home all in the name of family values. Throw in a dash of the standard Reaganomics trickle down talking points, add a scoop of buzz words like free market and tax cuts, and voila, you have just created yourself an easy bake Republican candidate.
All of these “mama grizzlies” are cut from the same cloth. They spew the same talking points, and each and every one of them is nothing more than camouflage for sexism and the same old Republican ideas. The GOP doesn’t seem to understand that even when it comes out of a woman’s mouth, it’s still sexism.
When either Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann is discussed by conservatives at some point the conversation always turns to their looks. They judge Palin and Bachmann based on their appearance, not their intellect. Liberals don’t hate Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann because their surgically enhanced appearance makes them “attractive” to some men.
Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann are disliked because they sell bad ideas. They are reviled because they are arrogant and ignorant. They are deemed repulsive because they are undoing the progress that their own gender has made. These two are walking talking commercials for the religious right’s belief in the subjugation of women. They are sending a horrible message to girls and women that your looks will always count more than your ideas, and that you can only be what a man tells you to be.
Palin and Bachmann are using the bible as justification for turning women into second class citizens.
They aren’t hated because they’re beautiful. They’re hated because they are empty.
