Not content with battling against Marriage Equality, the Family Research Council (FRC) wants to outlaw sodomy; moreover, they want to use prayer to bring this medieval reality about. Their latest prayer target list has people praying for countries that outlaw sodomy.
In answer, most of us would argue that on June 26, 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that all sodomy laws were unconstitutional (Lawrence v. Texas).
But as we also know, for religious extremists, the Constitution is beside the point when it doesn’t say what they want it to say. They love things like DOMA and DADT and are quick to whine if they perceive any violation, just as they are quick to demand action at the federal level in such cases, while ignoring the Constitution and decrying federal interference if it doesn’t suit their purposes. Moral relativism? Look no farther than these supposed champions of bedrock certitude.
Back in 2010, the FRC’s Peter Sprigg told Chris Matthews the Supreme Court got Lawrence v. Texas wrong. According to him, “gay behavior” should be illegal:
Matthews: I’m just asking you, should we outlaw gay behavior?
Sprigg: I think that the Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas which overturned the sodomy laws in this country was wrongly decided. I think there would be a place for criminal sanctions against homosexual behavior.
Matthews: So we should outlaw gay behavior?
Obviously, wanting “gay behavior” gone didn’t make it gone. You can wish in one hand and you “know what” in the other and see which one gets filled first. The unpalatable truth for the fundamentalists is that more and more states and more and more people are supporting Marriage Equality. What’s left but prayer? It worked for gas prices, after all! Oh wait…
The FRC claims that the Obama administration is pushing homosexuality on America (the ever popular “homosexualization” of America meme), and worse, doing it with our precious tax dollars! (Of course, they’re more than happy to use our precious tax dollars to criminalize a woman’s womb. Remember that moral flexibility.
So this is what the FRC wants to sell America now:
Pushing Homosexuality at Home and Abroad – President Bush endeared millions of Africans to the American people by his wildly successful program that used the ABC formula to reduce African AIDS: “1. Abstinence; 2. Be Faithful; 3. Use a Condom (if you will not do #1 and #2). African nations are warring to contain homosexuality’s spread because it is morally taboo, and has had a devastating impact upon Africans. Two thirds of all reported AIDS cases world-wide (24 of 36 million) have been in Sub-Saharan Africa. Amid this, the Obama administration is pushing homosexuality, using taxpayer dollars. Malawi’s U.N. Ambassador says the administration threatened to withhold $350 million in aid to his tiny, poor, mostly Christian nation, “if his government would not strike down its sodomy laws.” Malawi’s legislature succumbed within days. Meanwhile, last fall, 85 governments signed a pro-homosexual petition at the UN, but regional groups representing more than eighty countries condemned it openly. The U.S. government has become the chief player in efforts to promote homosexuality and homosexual rights overseas (see Obama’s Obsession ).
May God restrain the Obama administration from promoting the LGBT agenda at home and abroad. May He give targeted nations courage to withstand U.S. coercion! Forgive us for this evil (Ps 94:16; Is 3:9-15; Jer 7:3-11; Lk 17:2; Rom 1:32; Jas 3:13-18; Jude 7).
Christian conservatives seem bound and determined to march back into the Dark Ages and drag the rest of us back with them in their quest for some sort of mythical biblical purity. Let’s ban sodomy, put the kids back to work and keep the women barefoot and pregnant, as god intended. Bliss.
What I want to know is where my biblically-ordained concubines are. Just sayin’. And are we going to start seeing some biblical punishments for sinners like Robert Mecklenborg (R-OH)? If so, I want in.
Not so much bliss though. Not really. There is a reason civilization has marched steadily forward, away from those dark days and their draconian punishments into a somewhat more enlightened present. And we have a long way to go, make no mistake. But these fundamentalists don’t want to go into that better world. No, they say, go back! God will get mad! Egads, you’d think we were leaving the Garden of Eden again!
And since they can’t sway us by rational argument (they have none) they are reduced to praying us into submission. Personally, I’m willing to let them pray all they want; their prayers are not going to get the job done. If you want bedrock certitude, it’s right there. To date, fundamentalist prayer campaigns have accomplished exactly nothing. And they know it; they seem to lack faith in this regard as well. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t bother to vote; they’d just pray their candidates into office and ours out. In the end, you have to be struck by their complete lack of faith in the god they want us all to worship. It’s enough to make you think there aren’t two active brain cells in all of the religious right. What we do know is there are a whole bunch of anuses.
