Glenn Beck loves him some violent imagery. On his radio show today, Beck said that Obama’s food police are going to shoot Tony The Tiger in the head.
Here is the audio from Media Matters:
Beck said, “First they came for the Captain, and I said nothing. Then they came for the Clown, and I said nothing. Now they are coming for the Tiger. Obama’s food police are now focusing their efforts on Tony The Tiger. Is the way we fix America? Is this what our problem is? Seriously? Federal regulations are now threatening to drop all marketing of all sugar cereals, candies, soda, snacks and pretty much anything yummy if companies do not tweak their ingredients to lower sugar, sodium, and fat content. Remember at first suggest if suggesting won’t work, you nudge. If nudging won’t work, you shove. If shoving doesn’t work, you take Tony The Tiger out back and you shoot him in the head.”
What in the hell is Glenn Beck talking about?
Beck is referring to a working group composed of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) which set out to come up with some regulatory principles and guidelines for marketing food to children.
According to the working group’s own report, “The purpose of the Working Group’s proposed nutrition principles is to guide the industry in determining which foods would be appropriate and desirable to market to children to encourage a healthful diet and which foods industry should voluntarily refrain from marketing to children.”
The food and advertising industries are outraged by these recommendations and have mounted a full PR effort to stop them. No one is capping Tony The Tiger. The advertising principles are voluntary. Once again, Glenn Beck has managed to lie to audience with his real purpose being the protection of corporate interests.
It makes you wonder if Beck’s minute spent talking about capping Tony The Tiger was more right wing payola?
Those cereal makers and advertising firms probably spent good money to get on Glenn Beck’s show, and he made sure that they got their money’s worth in violent imagery that portrayed Obama as a dictatorial thug. Tony The Tiger isn’t going anywhere. This is all about corporate America protecting their ability to market obesity causing foods to children aged 2-11.
While America’s kids get fatter by the day, Glenn Beck continues to prove that he is the best corporate shill that money can buy. Wrap it around freedom, put a bullet in Tony The Tiger, and throw in a dash of fear of the black president, and you’ve got yourself a call to arms for the protection of corporate America.
Right wing lies to protect their corporate masters, They’re Grrreat!
