It was just three days ago when Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) brought an end to our great national nightmare: The whereabouts of the mysterious dong. And although Rep. Anthony Weiner was brought to shame (mostly over the ridiculous lies he made to, ahem, cover himself up), he rightfully feels that he hasn’t abused his public office or broken any laws.
Indeed, Mr. Weiner (can we even say that with a straight face anymore?) showed incredible lack of judgment and acted more like a cast member of MTV’s Jersey Shore than an intelligent Congressman . But it’s been very difficult for me to find any indictable (like lying to the American public to go to war) reason why Mr. Weiner should resign from office.
On the other hand, House Democratic leaders began an orchestrated effort on Wednesday to force Representative Anthony D. Weiner of New York to resign his seat, saying his sexually explicit Internet messages and subsequent lies about them were making him, and the party, “the subject of ridicule.”
I think it’s safe to say that they have done a pretty good job of doing that themselves for quite some time now. The pics of Anthony Weiner showed something hard, strong, and that wouldn’t back down. Democrats, on the other hand, have shown themselves to be a bunch of female genitalia (no disrespect to actual vaginas). From the nightmarish Bush years, curiously enough, to having control of both houses and the presidency, Democratic lawmakers have capitulated on nearly every major piece of legislation that sought to benefit the uber wealthy on the backs of the middle class.
The first call of feigned Democratic outrage came on Wednesday afternoon from Representative Allyson Y. Schwartz, Democrat of Pennsylvania, a Pelosi ally who is overseeing the recruitment of the party’s candidates for the 2012 election cycle.
A plethora of Democratic rank-and-file members quickly jumped on the resignation bandwagon as well, including Representative Mike Ross of Arkansas, Michael H. Michaud of Maine, Niki Tsongas of Massachusetts, Larry Kissell of North Carolina and Joe Donnelly of Indiana.
“Having the respect of your constituents is fundamental for a member of Congress,” she said in a statement released by her office. “In light of Anthony Weiner’s offensive behavior online, he should resign.I’m very disappointed in his actions. I think he should resign immediately,” he added, “and I think all the appropriate authorities should investigate this matter.” ~ Rep. Mike Ross (D-AR)
But it isn’t up to the panjandrums of the Democratic party to decide his fate.
Voter reaction in Mr. Weiner’s NY district over the debacle has been mixed. Some voters have taken to the Democratic leadership’s calls for resignation, while others said he should “never resign.” Moreover, some voters said he could still serve them in Congress despite the scandal. In addition, some of his advisers were urging him to stay on. But it’s pretty obvious that Mr. Weiner’s juvenile and creepy actions have majorly tarnished his credibility. It’s hard (no pun intended) for many to regard him as a populist progressive and stalwart of liberal values when the man is sending pictures of his erect winkie. Nevertheless, that still doesn’t mean the horny goober should not be given the chance of having his fate decided by the people he serves.
But for the Democratic leadership’s part, the actions of Rep. Weiner seem to only serve as a distraction and give Republicans the mudslinging fodder they love during a time when Democrats seem to be gaining some footing on such important issues as Medicare. Here’s a thought: how about you don’t focus on it and give it more life than it’s worth?!
From Sen. David Vitter (R-LA to former Rep. Christopher Lee (R-NY), Anthony Weiner is one of many sexually frustrated, horny goobers roaming the halls of Congress. Yet Republican Louisiana Sen. David Vitter Caught in the “D.C. Madam” Sex Scandal, a scandal way more sordid and one that involved actual sexual acts, was able to apologize and remain in office. In fact, Republicans are backing Senator Vitter’s reelection as vigorously as they are demanding the resignation of Weiner. The hypocrisy makes your eyes bleed. But what makes Mr. Vitter’s situation even more disgraceful is that he was one of many so-called Republican “morally upright guardians of family values,” who fiercely campaigned on the absolutist moralist platform, only to later get caught acting like a B-movie porn star.
Who knows– maybe he was being ‘patriotic’ like Newt Gingrich when he was cheating on his wife like Tiger Woods on the back 9.
Congressman Weiner may not be able to weather this storm, which probably wouldn’t have been as bad had he actually come clean in the beginning. President Bush created major messes and he was punished in 2006 when voters put the Democrats back in control of Congress. And while what Mr. Weiner did isn’t even in the same galaxy of all the massively illegal and deceptive (and that’s just the ones we know about) things former President Bush did, he should also have the opportunity to be punished by voters, not arrogant and self-serving Democratic leaders.
