For those of you who think Sarah Palin is presidential, take a look at what the real president was doing in tornado devastated Joplin, MO.
Sarah Palin turned Rolling Thunder into a circus of self-promotion with lines like, “There’s no better way to see D.C. than on the back of a Harley! My family may be used to snowmachines more so than motorcycles (though you couldn’t tell it with Todd driving a hog today with Piper on the back and with Bristol riding on the back of another bike). But whether you’re riding the open road or the frozen tundra, you’re celebrating a free spirit. What could be more American than that?”
On the other hand, President Obama was touring Joplin, Missouri bringing comfort and hope to those who have been though historic storms and destruction,
The main thing I just want to communicate to the people of Joplin is this is just not your tragedy. This is a national tragedy and that means there will be a national response. Craig Fugate, who has probably been the busiest man in the federal government over this last bit of months, has been on the ground since just the day after this happened, and he’s helping to coordinate with an outstanding team of state and local officials. We’re going to do everything we can to continue whatever search and rescue remains. We are doing everything we can to make sure that folks get the shelter that they need, the support that they need.
We’re working with the Governor to make sure that we cut through any red tape that’s necessary with respect to rebuilding here. And then we’re just going to have a tough, long slog. But what I’ve been telling every family that I’ve met here is we’re going to be here long after the cameras leave. We are not going to stop until Joplin is fully back on its feet.
So to all the volunteers who are helping out — one of the things that’s been incredible is to see how many people from out of state have driven from as far away as Texas, nearby Illinois, people just coming here to volunteer — firefighters, ordinary citizens. It’s an example of what the American spirit is all about. And that gives us a lot of encouragement at a time when obviously people are going through a lot of hardship.
While Sarah Palin spent her day taking advantage of the assembled crowd for PR purposes and warping Rolling Thunder to fit her hyper-partisan definition of patriotism, Barack Obama was doing the job of a president.
If you want to know why Sarah Palin can never be elected president the events of today were the perfect demonstration. Can you see Sarah Palin consoling natural disaster victims, and making sure that they get the aid and support they need in a time of crisis? More importantly, would you want Sarah Palin in that position?
Sarah Palin is a cult of personality. Her blog post on Rolling Thunder read more like narration for Sarah Palin’s Alaska than anything that a potential president would say. If anyone in the GOP is desperate enough to hitch their wagon to Palin, then they deserve what they get. The silliness that is Sarah Palin will never be taken seriously enough to reside in the Oval Office.
America doesn’t need a reality TV star in the White House. We need a president, and luckily we already have one in Barack Obama.
