The death of Osama Bin Laden has turned the political world on its ear. On his radio show today, even Rush Limbaugh praised Obama. Limbaugh said, “President Obama single-handedly came up with the technique in order to pull this off.”
Here is the video from Mediaite:
Limbaugh opened his show with, “We need to open the program today by congratulating President Obama. President Obama has done something extremely effective, and when he does, this needs to be pointed out. President Obama has continued the Bush policies of keeping a military presence in the Middle East. He did not scrub the mission to get Bin Laden.”
You would expect Rush to go off on a bender of how Bush deserves the credit for Bin Laden’s death, but then the curveball, the day that many of us never thought we would live to see, Rush Limbaugh gushed over Barack Obama,
President Obama has continued the Bush policies of keeping a military presence in the Middle East. He did not scrub the mission to get Bin Laden. In fact, it may be that President Obama single-handedly came up with the technique in order to pull this off. You see, the military wanted to go in there and bomb as they always do. They wanted to drop missiles and drop bombs and a number of totally destructive techniques here. But President Obama, perhaps the only qualified member in the room to deal with this, insisted on the Special Forces. No one else thought of that. President Obama. Not a single intelligence adviser, not a single national security adviser, not a single military adviser came up with the idea of using SEAL Team 6 or any Special Forces.
Our military wanted to go in there and just scorch the earth leaving no evidence of anything after the mission. But President Obama singlehandedly understood what was at stake here. He alone understood the need to get DNA to prove the death. Obama alone understood the aftermath. Alone understood that there would be doubting Thomases if the place was just obliterated and no evidence was to be found.
Not one member, well according to news reports, not one member of the military, not Gen. Patraeus, nobody in the intel community, nobody had the slightest idea of going in there and using special forces. It was President Obama singlehandedly and alone who came up with the strategy that brought about the effective assassination of Osama Bin Laden. He kept the Bush policies alive. Keeping the military presence in the Middle East, allowing the military to finish the job they started 10 years ago.
Pick your jaw up off the floor, because here is what Limbaugh said later in the same show:
Later Limbaugh tried to boost the spirits of his disappointed that Obama got Osama audience by saying, “Think of it this way, folks. All this story about Obama being a shoo in for reelection. If he was a shoo in for reelection, Osama Bin Laden would still be alive today. There would have been no need to undertake the mission, and Donald Trump wouldn’t have any jokes told about him on Saturday night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner if Obama were such a shoo in, but he’s not.”
That’s more like it. For a minute there, Rush Limbaugh had me going. This should be a lesson to anyone who isn’t used to writing about Rush Limbaugh and his radio show. Never, ever run with Limbaugh’s first statement. Sure he praised President Obama, but later he took it all back by undercutting Obama’s motives with his belief that the assassination of Bin Laden was a desperate move only done to help Obama’s 2012 reelection chances.
It is fascinating to see Republicans cower and bluster as their own politicized 9/11 propaganda monster has turned against them. Even Rush Limbaugh wouldn’t dare to criticize the President for getting Bin Laden. As the right, and some poor souls on the left who don’t understand that they are naively adopting a right wing talking point, bemoan the politicization of the death of Bin Laden, but who politicized 9/11 in the first place?
Hint: It wasn’t the Democrats.
Remember the 2004 Republican convention?
Whether some idealists want to admit or not, the death of Bin Laden is a huge political development. It can’t be ignored. Republicans would love for it to be ignored. They want Obama not to get credit for this, and I am sure they chuckle to themselves every time a progressive complains about the politicization of the death of Bin Laden.
There is no greater measure of how politically earthshaking this is than the fact that Rush Limbaugh spent the first two minutes of his radio show praising Obama by name. Just keep in mind that he spent exponentially more time later in the show, beyond the above clip, questioning President Obama’s motives for wanting to get Bin Laden.
A leopard may need some temporary political cover, but it will never change its spots.
Ever the genius, Rush Limbaugh has Breitbarted himself.
