Conservative Media Bias: ABC Silently Abets Birther Franklin Graham

Apr 24 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

Conservative media bias reared its head today as Franklin Graham was allowed to go on ABC’s This Week today and spout Obama birther theories unchallenged. After Graham went birther and hinted that Obama might also be a Muslim, host Christiane Amanpour sat quietly and said nothing as ABC News bowed down to their conservative media masters.

Here is the video from Media Matters:

Here is the transcript from ABC News:

AMANPOUR: Does it bother you that people like Donald Trump for instance right now, are making another huge big deal about birth certificates and whether he’s a Muslim or a Christian and where he was born?

GRAHAM: Well, the president, I know, has some issues to deal with here. He can solve this whole birth certificate issue pretty quickly. I don’t — I was born in a hospital in Ashville, North Carolina, and I know that my records are there. You can probably even go and find out what room my mother was in when I was born.

I don’t know why he can’t produce that. So, I’m not — I don’t know, but it’s an issue that looks like he could answer pretty quickly.

As it relates to Muslim, there are many people that do wonder where he really stands on that. Now, he has told me that he is a Christian. But the debate comes, what is a Christian?

For him, going to church means he’s a Christian. For me, the definition of a Christian is whether we have given our life to Christ and are following him in faith, and we have trusted him as our Lord and Savior.

That’s the definition of a Christian, it’s not as to what church you’re a member of. A membership doesn’t make you a Christian.

AMANPOUR: Do you believe him when he tells you he’s a Christian?

GRAHAM: Well, when he says that, of course. I can’t — I’m not going to say, “Well, no, you’re not.” God is the only one who knows his heart.

After Franklin Graham celebrated Easter with a birther attack on the President of the United States, This Week host Christiane Amanpour didn’t utter a peep. She didn’t have to confront Graham, but she could have added the fact that during the 2008 campaign the President already proved his citizenship.

This isn’t about liberal or conservative. This is about facts. Amanpour did a disservice to her audience, and helped further a long debunked conspiracy theory, by willfully ignoring the truth. The interview was taped, so it is possible that Amanpour did say something but later edited it out, which would be even more irresponsible.

The fact that Amanpour would give Franklin Graham an unchallenged platform with which to slander the President of the United States demonstrates how deeply biased the mainstream media has become. Every time the media doesn’t challenge a birther, they are quietly giving credibility to a conspiracy theory.

Obama’s birth certificate should not be treated as an issue. A political issue is a contested question can be debated from multiple perspectives, and have several answers. The Obama birth certificate is conspiracy theory. Every single birther lawsuit that has ever been filed has been tossed out of court. Obama produced a legal document that proved he was born in the United States, but the mainstream media likes to treat this as an issue because they pander to the right and the birthers a storyline for 2012.

For every George Stephanopoulos who will challenge the birthers, there are three Amanpour’s who will sit by and validate the birther conspiracy theory with their silence.

By staying silent, Amanpour allowed an untruth to be spread on her program.
