Freedom’s Victory: Judge Blocks Wisconsin Union Busting Bill Again

Mar 29 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

No matter how Scott Walker tries he just can’t seem to put an end to the freedoms enjoyed by those pesky working people. Last week in a surprise move, the Walker administration tried to do an end run around Judge Maryann Sumi’s order blocking the implementation of his union busting bill, but his victory was short lived as the judge ruled once again today that the bill can’t be implemented.

According to the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, the judge said, ‘Further implementation of the act is enjoined.’ Sumi noted her original restraining order issued earlier this month was clear in saying that the state should not proceed with implementing the law. The Walker administration did so after the bill was published Friday by a state agency not included in Sumi’s earlier temporary restraining order.

Four days ago, the Walker administration tried to skirt the judge’s order by having an office other than the Secretary of State publish the bill. Today Judge Sumi made it clear that her previous ruling applies to any implementation of the legislation, “Apparently that language was either misunderstood or ignored, but what I said was the further implementation of Act 10 was enjoined. That is what I now want to make crystal clear.”

State Republicans are claiming that the law remains in effect, which means that either they are willfully ignoring a court order, or they believe that they are above the law. In the history of Republican power grabs, this one takes the cake. There isn’t much doubt that Republicans violated the Open Meetings Law when they passed the original legislation, and they must be aware of the dubious nature of their legal standing, or else they would not be trying every political trick in the book to get the bill implemented without going to court.

Even though the national media treated this story like it was over after the Wisconsin Senate rammed the bill through, things are just getting started. Wisconsin has already turned into one of the most important and fascinating political stories of 2011. It is the epicenter of the battle between corporate interests, the politicians they own, and the people.

This conflict has led to the unleashing of a political force that has not been seen in this country for decades. Scott Walker will continue to be defeated, and he will likely be recalled, but the media will think that you don’t deserve to know about it, but you don’t have to own a television to enjoy the lush smell of liberty in the spring air. Just as the dull grey of winter is slowly shifting into the colorful rebirth of spring, freedom is enjoying its own revival. Without even realizing it, Scott Walker planted the seeds, and his actions have allowed the tree of liberty to blossom.

Like spinning of the Earth and the miracles of the Almighty, freedom cannot be stopped with the hands of one mortal tyrant.

As Scott Walker continues his hapless battle with a gift from the divine, his only nourishment shall come in the cup of defeat.
