In her latest attempt to attack President Obama and revive her 2012 rallying cry of drill, baby drill, Sarah Palin took to her Facebook page to try to blame Obama for the price of gasoline, and she also seemed to be under the delusion that Barack Obama controls the price of gas. Palin accused Obama of intentionally raising the price of gas and leveling a “hidden tax” on the American people.
On her Facebook page, Palin claimed that it has always been part of the Obama agenda to deny domestic drilling so that he could raise the price of gas, “This was no accident. Through a process of what candidate Obama once called “gradual adjustment,” American consumers have seen prices at the pump rise 67 percent since he took office. Let’s not forget that in September 2008, candidate Obama’s Energy Secretary in-waiting said: “Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.” That’s one campaign promise they’re working hard to fulfill! Last week, the British Telegraph reported that the price of petrol in the UK hit £6 a gallon – which comes to about $9.70. If you think $4 a gallon is bad now, just wait till the next crisis causes oil prices to “necessarily” skyrocket. Meanwhile, the vast undeveloped reserves that could help to keep prices at the pump affordable remain locked up because of President Obama’s deliberate unwillingness to drill here and drill now.”
She then claimed that by not allowing America to drill, baby drill, Obama is laying a hidden tax on the American people, “Hitting the American people with higher gas prices like this is essentially a hidden tax and a transfer of wealth to foreign regimes who are providing us the energy we refuse to provide for ourselves. Like inflation, higher energy prices are a hidden tax on Americans who are struggling to make ends meet. And these high gas prices will be felt in the form of higher food prices due to higher transportation costs. Energy is connected to everything in our economy. Access to affordable and secure energy is key to economic growth, which in turn is key to job growth. Energy is the building block of our economy. The President is purposely weakening that building block and weakening our country. 2012 can’t come soon enough.”
Much like the late night infomercial pitchmen who claims that you can lose the weight without exercise and diet, or that you can make a million dollars from home in your spare time, Sarah Palin is trying to appeal to the lazy among us who want something for nothing. The political success of Palin’s gas prices quick fix rests on the American people believing two big lies. The first lie is that we have enough oil to drill our way to energy independence. The second and bigger lie is that any oil that is drilled for in the United States belongs to, and will stay in the United States.
As I wrote when Palin started her drill baby drill nonsense after the BP oil spill, “Oil companies pay fees and royalties to state and federal governments for the right to drill. Any oil that they discover belongs to the companies, not the nation where the oil is taken from. The oil companies are free to sell their oil on the global market to anyone they please. This is why offshore drilling does not ease America’s energy woes.” This is also a concept that Sarah Palin refuses to grasp. Drill, baby drill isn’t a policy solution. It is a gift to Sarah Palin’s big oil sugar daddies.
Sarah Palin used a Wall Street Journal piece about now Energy Secretary Stephen Chu to back up her claim that it is Obama’s goal to raise gas prices to the level of Europe, but she managed to pull a Breitbart and leave out part of the story. Here is the part that Palin left out, “But Mr. Obama has dismissed the idea of boosting the federal gasoline tax, a move energy experts say could be the single most effective step to promote alternative energies and temper demand.”
They weren’t trying to raise gas prices to hurt Americans, but they were discussing potential ways to encourage Americans to adopt alternative fuels, and Obama rejected the idea of boosting the federal gas tax. Contrary to what Sarah the desert shadow president thinks, President Obama does not control the price of oil, and he can’t stop energy speculators from using any global event as an excuse to jack up the price of oil.
Sarah Palin has a three year old’s grasp of the nation’s energy woes, yet she thinks of herself as an energy expert. Palin is so intellectually deluded that she actually believes that Obama is intentionally causing the price of gas to go up, and that all of America’s energy woes will go away, not if we use less, or turn to alternative fuels, but only if we drill more. Palin’s solution doesn’t address the problem because the combination of her lack of intellectual curiosity, and her marriage to pop conservative ideology won’t allow her to acknowledge reality.
With her latest Unabomberesque Facebook manifesto, Sarah Palin has proven herself more equipped to star in a Proactiv infomercial than be President of the United States.
