Fox News Uses Fukushima Emergency To Promote US Nuclear Power

On Fox Business today, Eric Bolling made the case today that nuclear power is so safe that it can survive the an earthquake and a tsunami. He used Japan’s Fukushima-Daiichi power plant as an example of the safety of nuclear power. The problem is that there has been an explosion at the plant, and radiation has leaked out. This is a little fact that won’t be emphasized on pro-corporate big energy Fox News family.

Here is the video from Media Matters:

Bolling said, Japan’s nuclear power systems have been put on red alert, but it seems that they were built with built in safety systems, and they worked and there are no reports of leaks. President Obama today said we needed to focus on what he calls clean energy. I would say that if a nuclear reactor could survive this devastation that’s a pretty good real world test that we should give nuclear energy more of a chance.”

After playing a clip from the trailer for The China Syndrome, Bolling said, “That film scared the heck out of everybody by claiming that an overheated reactor could melt through the Earth straight to China, but that’s not really happening here.”

As we all know, the Fukushima-Daiichi plant suffered an explosion that the government said was caused by the building where the reactor is housed collapsing. Japan has extended evacuation area, and three workers on the scene have tested for radiation exposure. Radioactive chemicals were actually released into the air yesterday, and the situation has gotten worse today. The Fukushima plant is already the third worst nuclear disaster in history, but if you are a Fox News viewer you were led to believe that everything is just fine.

The Japanese government is trying their best to downplay the situation at Fukushima, but Fox News has an entirely different motive. They are out to shill for the nuclear power industry. The truth is that since the disaster struck Japan the government has had to issue 5 nuclear alerts. It is completely irresponsible, and almost otherworldly that Fox News would try to use the third worst nuclear disaster in history to advance the claim that the US needs more nuclear power.

If anything the events in Japan illustrate how fragile and vulnerable nuclear power can be. Fukushima is anything but an argument for nuclear power, but in the chilling worldview of Fox News a possible full meltdown is turned into a pro-nuclear power argument.

Fox News gave us a full Orwellian dose of the news from Japan today. As Orwell wrote in 1984, “If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say this or that even, it never happened-that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death.” 1984 can be found on every cable system in America, except in 2011 it is called Fox News.
