On his radio show today, Glenn Beck claimed that the Wisconsin police should blindly support Scott Walker and the GOP, because the Democratic Party is not their friend. Beck said, “I want to talk a little bit to the police officers of America. Police officers of America you are in in trouble… It’s like what are you doing? The Democrats not our friends. They’re not your friends.”
Here is the audio from Media Matters:
Beck said, “I want to talk a little bit to the police officers of America. Police officers of America you are in in trouble. It’s kind of like. I feel this way for people who are pro-Israeli, and then they vote Democrat. It’s like what are you doing? The Democrats not our friends. They’re not your friends. Same thing with the police. Police if the FOP is asking you to stand with the protesters in Wisconsin or elsewhere, understand who these people are. Not the teachers, you can be pro-teacher, pro-firefighter, pro-cop, but you must be very careful who you stand with, because you are giving power to a group that you don’t want to empower.”
The Republican budget proposal should tell police just what kind of friends that they have in the GOP. According to MSNBC, the GOP’s budget plan would virtually eliminate the COPS program, “The GOP bill would cut $600 million from Obama’s request for this fiscal year for the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, essentially killing the program…Since COPS was created in 1994, mayors and police chiefs around the nation have come to rely on the more than $13.5 billion in funds that flowed from Washington to shore up their police forces. The money has helped cities and towns hire more than 121,000 officers.”
The people who Glenn Beck wanted you to stand with are set to cut 121,000 of your jobs. These aren’t federal bureaucratic jobs. These are local police officers in small towns and big cities all across this country. If the COPS program is gutted the impact will be felt all over America. What kind of friend eliminates your job during the worst recession in recent memory? Democrats don’t hate the police. Vice President Joe Biden is the person who wrote the COPS legislation. Democratic president Bill Clinton signed it into law, and today the Democrats are fighting to preserve your right to collectively bargain.
Glenn Beck believes that the police should blindly support and follow the Republican Party. To put this in language that the Nazi obsessed Beck can understand, he thinks that the Wisconsin police should serve as Scott Walker’s Gestapo. He believes that the duty of the police is to protect and serve, not us all, but the Republican ideology.
Any officer of the law who follows Glenn Beck is risking being misled straight to the unemployment line.
Police officers put their lives on the line for the rest of us every day. They have fought hard for their right to collective bargain, and those who have chosen to stand with the Wisconsin protesters understand that this is an issue of economic liberty.
Law enforcement officers around the country would be wise to ignore the words of propaganda minister Beck, and instead heed the advice of founding father John Adams, “There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty.” Your liberty is at stake.
Don’t be spared today in order to be sacrificed tomorrow.
