President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at the White House daily press briefing today to react to the shooting of four U.S. airmen outside of the airport in Frankfurt, Germany. Obama said, “I want everybody to understand that we will spare no effort in learning how this outrageous act took place, and in working with German authorities to ensure that all of the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

Here is the video of Obama from Fox News:

On Wednesday, a gunman opened fire on a bus carrying U.S. airmen outside of terminal 2 of the Frankfurt airport. Two airmen were killed and two others were wounded in the attack, which Obama reacted today by saying, “I want to take a brief moment just to say a few words about a tragic event that took place earlier today in Frankfurt, Germany. I am saddened and I am outraged by this attack that took the lives of two Americans, and wounded two others.”

The President pledged to do everything possible to bring those who were responsible for this attack to justice, “I want everybody to understand that we will spare no effort in learning how this outrageous act took place, and in working with German authorities to ensure that all of the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

Obama called the attack an example of the dangers that our service people face around the globe, “We don’t have all the information yet, and you will be fully briefed as we get more information, but this is a stark reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices that our men and women in uniform are making all around the world to keep us safe, and the dangers that they face all around the globe.”

The president concluded by expressing his and the American people’s condolences to the families of the victims, “So I think it’s fair to say that on behalf of the American people we want to extend our deepest condolences to these families and we will give you further updates as we get more information about it.

The President is correct. As 9/11 demonstrated, it is imperative that America be vigilant against potential threats on U.S. soil, but the most vulnerable of our citizens around the globe are those who wear the uniform of the United States of America. This incident should be a reminder that terrorists don’t focus on one particular place or target. They plan and execute their attacks based on vulnerabilities, and the airmen at the airport were a vulnerable target.

In their quest to use the threat terrorism as a campaign strategy, Republicans have redefined the word in the minds of many Americans to be strictly limited to incidents that could occur in the United States, but the reality is that citizens who are serving their country abroad face a much greater threat than you or I ever will while walking down Main St. of Any Town, USA. Republican fear tactics try to spread the feeling that we are all in danger, but most of us will never be on the front lines like those who serve.
