Fox News’ legal analyst Peter J. Johnson attacked the Wisconsin protesters as vile, “I mean this is really vile, in my view. What is this Facebook central? They’ve covered the capitol with posters on the walls. They’re sleeping on the floors. Do you think there’s enough restrooms in the facility?”
Here is the audio from Media Matters:
Johnson was discussing the plan not to let all the Wisconsin protesters to sleep in the capitol building anymore when he said, “I mean this is really vile, in my view. What is this Facebook central? They’ve covered the capitol with posters on the walls. They’re sleeping on the floors. Do you think there’s enough restrooms in that facility? What’s the plan?”
After being told that the protesters believe that this is the people’s house, Johnson continued, “Oh, I understand the people’s house, but you don’t move in unless someone invites you. At some point you say well, you can have a demonstration, but don’t live here.” According to Fox’s News’ legal analyst freedom of assembly is limited to whether or not the government invites the protesters to stay in a building which is owned by the public, and maintained in part with revenue generated by the protesters’ tax dollars.
This is a much different reaction to the guaranteed right of freedom of assembly than the one Fox News expressed when they had one of their producers lead the cheers at a September 2009 Tea Party rally:
Since a 1958 Supreme Court ruling in the case of NAACP v. Alabama, the freedom of association/freedom of assembly is constitutionally connected to the First Amendment right of free speech. Fox News is arguing for limiting the right to free speech by Democratic/liberal/progressive protesters. We all know that Fox News would never dare make this argument about the Tea Party protests.
If the Tea Party did such a thing they would be praised as brave patriots by Fox News, but these Wisconsin protesters were deemed vile by the warped morality police at FNC.
No one should be surprised that the totalitarian loving Fox News has come out against the right to free speech and assembly. Fox News claims to be patriotic and love freedom, but they attack our liberties at every turn. Fox News, like the modern conservative movement, wrap themselves in the language of the flag and Constitution while assaulting the very rights that generations of brave Americans have shed their own blood to preserve.
What’s going on in Wisconsin is about an unjust use of political power, and by siding with the corrupt Republican public servant, Fox placed partisanship over journalism and liberty. Fox once again put on full public display its hatred of America and our freedoms when those liberties are invoked and fought for by the left.
