The GOP Readies An Attack On Everything From Sesame Street to Science

If there was any doubt about the intention of House Republicans to work on job creation, they can be put to rest now.  Americans can relax in the knowledge that the conservative annihilation of anything resembling culture or science is well underway. America will slip into the Stone Age as Dominionists and Christian Reconstructionists usher in their theocratic rule with the help of Republicans and conservatives.

Shortly after House Republicans voted to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act, John Boehner announced their next attack will be on “funding of abortions across all federal programs” in spite of the fact that Republicans promised to address job creation during the campaign prior to the midterm election. Boehner continued saying, “Our members feel strongly about the sanctity of human life” and that Republicans “listened to the American people; it’s one of our highest legislative priorities.”  Boehner apparently missed the message of Republicans and American voters (63%) who said that the economy and job creation was their biggest concern. There has still been no effort by Republicans to work on job creation.

Republicans are working on a spending bill, and some of programs they are going to eliminate are: the National Endowment for the Arts, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Title X birth control and family planning, AmeriCorps, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Energy Star program and work on fuel efficient cars. It is painfully obvious that Republicans are working from a philosophical mindset that favors religious extremism instead of humanitarian endeavors or improving the quality of life in America.

There is little doubt that Republicans are engaging in a culture war by defunding organizations like the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities, because the people who support Republicans see little value in the arts, science, or education. Republicans have successfully made the connection between arts programs and the liberal elite, and in fact, eliminating programs like PBS and the Arts are programs that Newt Gingrich targeted in 1995. The chairman of the Republican Study Committee, Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), said the targets the RSC and Republicans want to eliminate are what the voters “elected us to do.” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said he applauded the committee’s effort, but like Boehner, is silent on job creation that Republicans promised would be their highest priority.

The budget savings for cutting the arts and PBS programs will not be substantial, but will satisfy the religious right who see the arts as a secular undermining of Christian extremist values the same as science does. By eliminating the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Republicans are killing two birds with one stone. Radical Christians and mainstream Christians alike deny the science of climate change. A popular argument from the bible crowd is that god controls the climate and that scientists are attempting to subvert god’s role. The energy industry has worked tirelessly to discredit global climate science as a fraud with the help of Republicans to stop efforts at a cap and trade system to limit the amount of pollution put into the air.

It isn’t surprising that Republicans are doing the bidding of the energy industry. What other reason could Republicans have for eliminating the Energy Star Program or work on fuel efficient cars? The public benefits from more energy efficient appliances and automobiles, and America benefits by reducing our dependency on foreign oil. Republicans though, work for the oil industry and by eliminating energy efficiency programs are repaying the Koch Brothers for the campaign contributions they made during the midterm election campaign. One must wonder; when are the American people going to see that Republicans do not have their best interests in mind?

The most disturbing aspect of the Republican’s proposed cuts is for Title X reproductive health and AmeriCorps. Both programs are in place to assist low-income groups, but especially the family planning and reproductive health program, Title X. The program assists low-income and poor families with their reproductive health and family planning issues. According to the Department of Health and Human Services; the Title X Family Planning program was enacted in 1970 as Title X of the Public Health Service Act. Title X is the only federal grant program dedicated solely to providing individuals with comprehensive family planning and related preventive health services. The Title X program is designed to provide access to contraceptive services, supplies and information to all who want and need them. By law, priority is given to persons from low-income families.

So the cuts are not just to punish the liberal elite that the conservative movement is so intent on destroying, but to deprive low-income families from receiving family planning information and contraception. It is somewhat suspicious that Republicans are attacking programs that are contrary to religious groups like the AFA who are sponsoring the Personhood Amendments that consider all forms of birth control murder.  Conservative pundits and Republicans claim Democrats are involved in class-warfare when they balked at extended the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy, but with the attempt to eliminate programs for the poor have shown that they are the ones who are actively engaging in warfare against the poor and working-class.

The Republicans’ efforts are little more than a culture war meant to destroy an entire way of life in America at the behest of the energy industry and religious right.  Republicans promised to create jobs during the midterm campaign, but the reality is they are only interested in eliminating programs that help the disadvantaged and enrich the oil industry. Although the American people said their priority was economic recovery and job creation, Republicans have not made any attempts at either.

After Representative Jordan finished announcing the programs Republicans were going to eliminate, a reporter queried him regarding negotiating with Democrats. Jordan’s reply should be a warning to Americans as to the Republicans’ true motivation. Jordan said, “Some of these Democrat senators may have seen the light and found Jesus and realized they now need to cut spending in light of what the American people said last fall.” Representative Jordan doesn’t remember that the American people said they want jobs and economic recovery; not finding Jesus or killing off Big Bird and the Cookie Monster.

Americans will soon discover that Republicans are going to provide them with Bush-era policies on steroids and a theocracy instead of democracy. As the rest of the world progresses into the 21st century, America is sliding into the Stone Age with the help of Draconian policies courtesy of Republicans and the moral majority.
