Ricky Gervais made quite a spectacle of himself at the Golden Globes this year. While in 2010, he hit the right American note with his humor, this year, he left the audience gasping as he skewered the untouchables with what Americans deemed to be nasty humor. After his scathing opening, Gervais disappeared for a while and Twitter gave rise to rumors that he had been gagged. But Ricky says it ain’t so.
No, no, that wasn’t a pun regarding his tasteless joke about poor Hugh Heffner’s fiancée.
So, unlike poor Sarah Palin whom Americans have indeed asked to shut up, but who refuses to give ground from her Fox News bunker where she adamantly declares that she will not shut up, will never shut up (please, Lord, have pity on us!), Ricky Gervais says no American told him to shut up. Shut up!
You can watch both his 2011 and 2010 presentations here.
The Daily Mail reports:
“A spokesperson for the comedian today called rumours he was chastised by bosses ‘utter rubbish’ fueled by ‘Twitter speculation.’ Gervais insists the the mood backstage was ‘great’ and his extended time away from the camera was planned.”
“(T)he president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association blasted the comedian for his routine, saying he had ‘crossed the line’ with some of his jokes. It’s unclear if HFPA President Philip Berk will support Gervais coming back next year for a third time.
‘Some of the things he said were totally unacceptable,’ he told The Hollywood Reporter.”
Like maybe his intro of Robert Downey Jr, “Many of you in this room probably know him best from the Betty Ford Clinic and the Los Angeles County Jail.” ? Or perhaps they’re referring to, “It’s an honor to be here in a room full of what I consider to be the most important people on the planet. Actors. They’re just better than ordinary people, aren’t they?”
You bet they are, Ricky! But satire of Hollywood has never been well-received unless it’s being conceived of by the very power-brokers who know just where to draw the line. See, you’re not supposed to call out individuals. That’s not how we do it in America.
In America, we only allow hate speech if you’re a conservative politician, Ricky! Live and learn. See, we like our mean delivered with sanctimonious, self-righteous aplomb, not satirical wit. If you bring the mean down and dirty and slather it with righteous yelps of “Don’t Tread on Me!” whilst carrying an assault rifle, we’ll never ask you to shut up. After all, you’d be entitled to free speech then.
Here’s to next year, Ricky! Pssst….If you wear a flag pin and claim to be representing Jesus, all will be forgiven. After all, “Real Americans” hate those Hollywood elites more than you ever could! And just think, maybe then you can run for Vice President!
